Recently, they&#8217;ve switched from a dedicated processing program to the <a href=\"http:\/\/boinc.berkeley.edu\/\">BOINC project<\/a>, which lets you volunteer CPU cycles to projects other than SETI.<\/p>\n<p>I installed the <a href=\"http:\/\/boinc.berkeley.edu\/download.php?platform=linux&#038;version=5.2.13&amp;type=sea\">Linux version 5.2.13<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/boinc.berkeley.edu\/download.php\">BOINC<\/a> per <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spy-hill.net\/%7Emyers\/help\/boinc\/unix.html\">the instructions<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The BOINC client failed to download any work units until I opened port 123 UPD in and out on my firewall. <\/p>\n<p>Then the client was running, but the BOINC manager (GUI) wouldn&#8217;t connect to it.  I kept getting a dialog box that said <i>The password you have provided is incorrect, please try again<\/i>.  The solution that I found was this:<\/p>\n<p><code>su -<br \/>su boinc<br \/>cd \/var\/lib\/boinc<br \/>\/usr\/local\/BOINC\/boincmgr<br \/><\/code><\/p>\n<p>I have BOINC installed in <code>\/usr\/local<\/code>.  Switching to root first is necessary because the boinc user has no password.<\/p>\n<p>-or-<\/p>\n<p>(as root)<br \/>$ cd \/var\/lib\/boinc<br \/>$ echo somepassword > gui_rpc_auth.cfg<br \/>$ service boinc restart<\/p>\n<p>(as any user)<br \/>$ cd<br \/>$ echo somepassword > gui_rpc_auth.cfg<br \/>$ \/var\/lib\/boinc\/boincmgr<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been running SETI@Home on a Windows box for years.
